| Texas is now a minority state |
[12 Aug 2005|09:56am] |
As a native Texan, I found this to be very interesting.
It is also curious that all but one of the non-white majority states are also border states; plus the fact that most of the ones that will join the ranks are also border states.
The times they are a changin'!

| Bing |
[31 Jul 2005|04:09pm] |
I know we talk about food a lot, but we eat three times on most days and it is SOOOOOOO different here. Anyway, last night we went to one of our favorite dessert places to get cooled off and eat something. It’s called a “bing” (Chinese for ice). It consists of very finely shaved ice covered with fresh fruit which is then covered with a couple of tablespoonsful of evaporated milk and then to top it off they put on some sort of sweet syrupy stuff. Sounds good huh? Well, the locals add a twist. Instead of fresh fruit, many put on beans! I’m talking red beans! Cooked in sugar! Sweet red beans. YUK! Last night I saw something I had never noticed before. Some, for a special treat, top their ice with whole kernel corn. Get a mental picture of that. Ice covered with corn covered with sweet milk and syrup. MMMMMMMMM There is no accounting for taste.

For those of us who watch what we eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health from Oprah. It's a relief to know the truth after all the conflicting medical studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
4. The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.
Man, am I glad we're learning to speak Chinese!

You're All I Need - KSBJ Houston |

It looks like the worst of it may be past. The eye has passed over the Island so now it is just a lot of rain. We stayed inside all day Monday so we could hardly tell it was a typhoon in our apartment. This morning while walking to the subway station I did see a lot of leaves, limbs, & debris but the news says that it is mostly over.

| We've just returned . . . . |
[17 Jul 2005|05:28pm] |
It seems like we've been on the road a lot lately. I guess because we have! First I went to Thailand, then Fran and I both went to Singapore, three or four days after returning from there we both went to Green Island. It was hectic but fun. We have put up an album of some of the random things we saw on green island. TheBellSite Gallery :: Green Island

| Today is Travis' Birthday |
[27 Jun 2005|10:19pm] |
Travis - Remember when... Sock fights were popular? Tree houses were the hang out place? Camouflage and war paint were your main disguise? Digging holes was a fun sport, and riding in rolling trash cans was the neighborhood transportation? Well, here's one you've probably forgotten... It was way before.... Soccer at the YMCA, Bowling at Jupiter Lanes, and ... Elf bowling on the computer. Weren't you a handsome little....
ELF! Happy Birthday! We love the man you are today! Love, Mom & Dad

Can't hear it |
] |
Most people who know me, know that my hearing is not that great. Before the kids grew up I can remember many times when they said, "Dad, you're full of gravy!" That meant that I had once again mis-heard something that was said. This cartoon brought a smile to my face for a couple of reasons :-)
I know that you think you heard what . . . . .

I received the latest Ministry Toolbox today and spotted this good article on leadership. It's worth the trip :-)
Pastors.com | Encouraging pastors and church leaders Everything rises or falls on leadership, and most problems can be traced to a lack of competent leadership. I believe one of the greatest problems today is a leadership shortage . . . .

Yippee! I feel like I'm standing under a shower of blessings, as God has answered lots of prayers all at once. He has provided new ladies to serve as leaders in our class. we have just enough time to get them trained this semester, so we can start with a fully equipped team in Sept. for the Genesis Study. Yea God! Fran

Yesterday, Tuesday, the office was closed. Fran & I enjoyed the day off by catching up on a few things, potting some plants we bought at the flower market on Sunday, & just generally relaxing.
The office was closed due to a national holiday. It was Tomb Sweeping Day. For a pretty good description of what that is, go Here

As I sit at my computer and eat lunch I am reminded of last night . . . . Fran and I went out yesterday after my language class (in the pouring rain) so that I could get my ears lowered and have a hamburger for dinner. I got my hair cut off shorter than ever and I think I like it. We then went to a TGIFridays in an area that caters to foreigners. They have one of the best hamburgers in Taipei. We were not disappointed :-) After that we went to a grocery store that has a little bit of "normal" western stuff looking for some "normal" salad dressing. If you like Thousand Island you can get it anywhere, but anything else requires a bit of searching. Anyway . . . . After the grocery store we stopped at a McDonald's for some ice cream. I know, I know, not exactly the best in town but at least it's not $3 a scoop! While we were sitting at our table enjoying the ice cream and each other's company I saw something I have never saw before. There was a lady at a nearby table who had obviously settled in for the long haul. Dinner (fish sandwich, fries, and two bowls of soup), cell phone, notepad all laid out and ready for the evening. While she was on the phone chatting I watched her as she opened up 4 or 5 packets of pepper (ground black pepper) and pour them into a nice big pile. Then she started dipping her fries into the pepper (like I do with ketchup) and ate them. Yummy, huh? jackie
